Diana was just getting off work at the book store and looked across the hall to see Carlyle standing there as he always did. She remembered when he was first assigned to her and she had to fight with him to let her stay at the book store alone. It was owned by a former guardian so she was perfectly safe, but he still persisted on being right across the hall at the coffee shop while she was at work. "You ready to go?" she asked smiling and looking at his guardian clothing. "You know you are aloud to wear jeans." she said teasing him and began her walk to her apartment.

Why did she have to be so persistent as to keep him across the street? Carlyle was assigned to her, to sacrifice his life to protect this girl - yet she spent her time at a book store, where he was incapable of protecting her. Just to keep her appeased, he stayed across the street at the coffee shop, sipping coffee - every once in a while. He looked up at her, as she approached him. A smile came across his face, his beautiful little friend - he loved being around her.

"I am ready to go now, that you are back in the real world. You know how bothersome it is for me, when you are in there? I can't even do my job, I can't protect you in there..."

He stood up slowly and took a place right next to Diana, and looked down at her. My oh my was she short, he had nearly a foot on her - and that made him smile. With a gentlemen's attitude, he bowed before the girl. The comment about his clothing was funny, he was already a Dhampir - he needed to at least attempt to be presentable to the public.

"Diana, I have to dress formally when I am out in the court with you. I don't want you to be embarrassed or be talked about because your Guardian dresses informally. So how was your day, dear?"

Diana laughed at this "Razz, you know me,I could care less about the politics of court," she went outside and saw a group of Guardians walk by and she nodded her head at them and said "Hello." She looked out at the horizon and saw the sun starting to rise and knew that she defiantly was going to be tired again. She felt a yawn slip and then looked at Carlyle "You know I am perfectly capable of protecting myself. Also the Court is full of Guardians." she said then smiled at the memory of the stories she had heard of when Guardians were not enough for Rose Hathaway. She had never met her but knew her bu her reputation.

He did know for a fact that the politics were of no interest to her, but they still mattered to him - it was a matter of appearances. The Dhampir were spat upon, literally, and he didn't want to bring down Diana, so he did anything within his ability to make her look outstanding. He did love her kindness though, one of the few Moroi that would even treat Guardians with dignity - and that was why he chose her. She was abnormally kind and loving, and he thought it would be a good idea to serve someone like her. The fact that she brought up the other Guardians kind of hurt, because he was hers - and half of them hadn't ever seen battle, and he had been in a war - more so than any normal Guardian could say.

"Diana, I know you don't care, but I do. I speak for my own race when I say I don't want us to be looked down upon. I want to be something you can be proud of, so I break myself doing it. And I know you can protect yourself, but I was created for that one soul purpose. And these other Guardians.... do they even have their marks? Most of them do not, but to go as far and say that they have a Zvezda mark like myself? Very few Guardians have my reputation, madam."

He started walking, putting out his arm to escort her. Protecting was his life, protecting her was his job and his only purpose. She could defend herself, sure, but magic only goes so far - brute strength can be undeniably efficient. His face grew stern as he was ready to go back to being her Guardian instead of her friend, until they were in private.

"And what was that you said about my clothing? Do I not look good in suits, Miss Malikov?"

He laughed slightly at his question, a rhetorical, sarcastic question.

"You are right not alot of Guardians have the Zvezda mark, but they do have alot of Molnija marks." she gigged and threaded her arm through his. When she had asked him about the battle he was in to get his mark she had been frightened. But sh ehad learned to get over it she had never seen a Strigoi but she knew that it was no joke. That was why she was learning to use her magic to fight.

"Razz I love you in your suits, but they are just not colorful. All black gets boring." she said teasing him. Then she looked up at the sky and knew she wasn't going to have time to practice today. "Dang the sun is coming up. I wanted to practice." she mumbled to herself as she saw her apartment come into view.

It was true, Molnija marks were common, but they were petty really. He sat there and thought, if he had gotten Molnija instead of the Zvezda, he would have a black neck from markings - that was ugly, in his opinion. In his mind he knew how many he killed, but to avoid being trashy looking, he simply requested a single Zvezda. As she looped her arm with his, he smiled and kept walking. If he didn't know any better, he would say he cared for her - maybe too much for a Dhampi and Moroi. But he shook that off, protecting her was more important than loving her. The suit comment made him laugh and gave him that little boost of confidence he needed for the day.

"Well, another Guardian can protect you - when they have been through what I have, Diana. Until then, none of them are worthy of you and your beauty. And my suits? I am devilishly good-looking, dear. I see people staring at me, even though they shouldn't - and it gives me confidence to protect you everyday and be near your gorgeous self, everyday. As for my suits, lets go shopping - you can pick out the colors."

As they approached the apartment with her, he smiled - gazing back at her. She seemed pretty upset that the sun was coming up, and that she couldn't practice. It hurt him to even see disappointment on her face, and he would do anything to resolve her problems. He probably wasn't meant to hear the comment, but he did - so he had to give some reassurance.

"Tell you what, Diana. Tomorrow you can practice on me - just don't kill me. I am a good opponent, no?"

He laughed at that, of course he was a worthy opponent.

Diana laughed "Ok I will try not to drown you." she said and laughed. She was looking forward to winter. Last winter her and Carlyle had a snow ball fight and she had used some magic to win her way to victory.

They got to the front door of the apartment they shared and she gave another yawn. "About the shopping I am taking you out for a normal wardrobe. for the days we go out and do normal things." she said smiling and dug her key out of her purse that she got for her birthday. She stepped in and went straight to her bedroom to get dressed for bed. "How was your day?" she called out to him.

He hated water, it terrified him - but if it was to enhance his comrades powers - he would do anything. Her powers were great and could only get better and he was an excellent training dummy, so why not go for what a Strigoi was really like? Of course they were more powerful than Carlyle actually was, he was almost on par with them - when he continuously trained. Even thinking about how strong those creatures were... it angered him, it made him want to destroy them all. And he would, eventually he would drive one his signature silver stakes through each of their hearts. But that was another time, another place- so he shook the memories out of his head, as Diana opened the door. He walked in behind her, almost as if he was a zombie - he was tired, it took a lot of energy to convince yourself you were doing your duty, when you really weren't.

"That sounds splendid dear, I look forward to it. You are tired, you need to go to bed as soon as you possibly can, Miss Malikov."

He went and fell onto a couch and stared directly at the ceiling as Diana went to her bedroom. He would never go in there unless she requested him in there, and come to think of it - he had never been into her room. Her privacy was something they probably both valued and wanted to keep sacred, and Carlyle would never dare to break such a sacred thing. As he lay there, she called out to him - so he replied, trying to be quiet but loud at the same time.

"It was... exciting, but you know that is a lie. I drank coffee, talked to other Guardian's that went by. I got to tell my war story, which everyone was impressed with... but honestly, it wasn't exciting. The best part was when I actually got to see you were safe, Diana. How was your day, I trust it was better than mine?"

Diana finished getting changed and went and sat down next to Carlyle. "Same old. Talked about books all day." she said with a sleepy smile. She grabbed the remote and turned on the television to relax from her long day of book keeping. She laid her head on his shoulder and said "I need more excitement in my life."

He thought she would be going to sleep, but she surprised him - by coming and sitting next to him. He tried to sit up as much as possible while still relaxing, so he wouldn't be disrespectful to Diana. Interesting day, Carlyle would have loved to be reading books - but he didn't, he felt like it was almost taboo if he did. Knowledge would have been amazing to have, but between workouts and his duty to the Malikov's to keep their daughter safe, he had no time. He stared at her as she laid her head on his shoulders, she smiled - which in turn gave him a tiny smile. He slowly wrapped an arm around her and held her like that, so she could be comfortable. He leaned into her head as much as he possibly could, burying his face in her hair.

"Your life is exciting, you are a Moroi! That is enough to be exciting. The most excitement I get is nearly being killed, or nowadays - get heckled by young Guardians to hear about killing Strigoi. That part is the least favorite of mine now. Even if they are evil, you are still haunted after a kill - and I killed.... too many, way too many. Sorry to go off on a rant, madam, I am just a bit goofy from exhaustion. I do hope you will forgive me."

"I know." she said hearing his story. "But you know you are not slaves. That is why you get days off and why I asked you to go have some fun while I am at work." she said smiling at hi again. Her and Carlyle had become really close. They had barley even known each other when they had decided to request each other. But she was happy she did. She had to fight to even get a Guardian because she was not a Royal but the outcome was well worth it. Carlyle and her were really good friends, even if he tried to act all business when they were out and about. But she would loosen him of that habit in a couple of years.

She always seemed to ease the tension in every situation, and was able to make Carlyle forget everything that was going on. The fact that she thought they were not slaves was interesting, because they literally were - he could have either taught other Guardians, become a Guardian - or be hunted for the rest of his life. The only option he had, was to fight - and protect and serve, that was his duty. He nodded as she mentioned the fact that he had his own free will while she worked, but that was obviously an objection in his book.

"Diana, I am staying at that coffee shop everyday you work. I need to be at least within earshot of you, for my own sake. And plus, there are daily coffee drinkers that love to chat with me, and maybe a young lady will find me ravishing in my new suits. I will sincerely take my day off, when I can have you with me - until then, coffee shop Razzy, for you."

He laughed, with a big silly grin on his face, as he stuck his tongue out at Diana. Underneath it all, he was just a softy - tormented by war and by his duty, but he had her. She kept him sane, balanced out his flaws - and in return, he did the same for her, as best he could. He hadn't even thought about how close they were, and that was more so than any other Guardian and Moroi, at least that he knew of. She didn't feed off of him, which most Guardians were blood bags to the Moroi, and she never really got mad at him - they were like family. As they continued watching TV, he took his hand and shook her hair up, just to playfully mess it up.

"You look like a bird just nested in your hair, and saw me - then ran, tearing it all up. You should take care of that, eventually, Miss Malikov."

Diana smiled at him and knew that no matter what she said he would always view Guardians as slaves. She was sitting down in peace with him then he messed up her hair and made fun of it. "Hey!" she said running her hands through her hair and going to get her brush from her room and fixing it. "You get meaner as the sun comes up.' she said teasing and sitting down again. "So while I am asleep what are you going to go out and do?" she asked. Knowing that he had to leave while she was asleep at least for a little bit. He liked to check on Guardian stuff.

He laughed as she stormed off to get her brush, he enjoyed teasing her. He wasn't mean, at least to himself he wasn't, he simply enjoyed messing around with her - they were family, and isn't that what family did? As he was asked the question of what he would do while she slept, he became dumbfounded. He hadn't even thought about it, not even a glimmer into the future of what he planned on doing. His daydreaming was interrupted, however, when his stomach began to growl uncontrollably. He smiled back at her and put his hand over his stomach and laughed a bit.

"Well my body says I need to eat, so I might just go grab some food and.... then, um. Probably get better with my stakes, train a bit, get to where I can rip a Strigoi's spine out of his nose.... you know, the usual. And then probably come back here and sleep, until you get up - if that is okay with you, Madam Malikov."

Diana smiled "Like you need my approval." she said yawning again. Then she looked at the clock and saw how early it was. "Ok well I better be off to sleep. I am off tomorrow and I am taking you shopping." she said with a smile she went back over to the couch and gave Carlyle a hug. "Have a good time Razz." she kissed him on the cheek and retreated into her room. She was lucky. For being right out of high school she was lucky that she got such a great Guardian. They were such great friends, they were family.

He laughed at the comment about needing her approval, of course he didn't need it - he was his own man, and he was entitled to his own choices. But he did like to know whether or not she needed him, because he felt the unnatural need to be by her side twenty-four-seven. Her yawns were precious, he somewhat enjoyed them - because she reminded him of a cat in those moments. He wrapped his arms around her for the few seconds that they hugged, and then he felt the kiss on his cheek. Those always made him happy, in combination - because they were an undying sign of love and affection, and he accepted them graciously. After he heard her get into her bed, he went out - to go eat and enjoy his free time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that day:

Carlyle had finished eating and literally gorged himself, and he could have said he easily gained forty pounds from food. He laughed, because his workout routines were so physically demanding, that it drained him of all those carbohydrates and nutrients - so in essence, he literally had to eat that much to even stay the same. He casually strolled back to the house, ready to surprise Diana, waking her up and showing her what he had bought while he was out. He took her advice and bought some jeans and just wore a regular shirt, covered with a cardigan. He looked fancy still, but he also looked somewhat formal - which is what he assumed Diana wished for. He opened her apartment door silently and knocked on her door, so he wouldn't invade her privacy.

"Lady Malikov, I am here to request your gorgeous hand in assistance - to help me buy suits. Will you do me the honor, please Madam?"

Diana woke up to knocking on here door. She smiled "Come in" she said and went into her closet to get dresses. "Where do you want to go shopping? I was thinking of going out of Court. Go into town?" she said making it a slight question. She rally left Court but it was nice to leave every now and then.

He walked in, baffled - because this was the first time he had entered her room. He closed the door behind him and averted his eyes from her, just in case she was indecent, which made him stare at her bed - which was odd for him. At the question of where to actually go to shop, he had no idea - but he would go anywhere with Diana. He tapped his foot as he waited for her, and began humming a song - before he even realized she was waiting on him to reply to her. He chuckled slightly and then answered her question.

"Well, you want to go out of the Court - then I will escort you every step of the way, my beautiful Diana."

She came out in skinny jeans and her favorite graphic tee. She walked out too see Carlyle still standing. "You can sit you know." she smiled at him and grabbed her eyeliner and quickly put it on. Then she turned and did a double take. "Razz! Your wearing jeans!" she said happily. It was a first and she wasn't going to lie they looked really good on him.

She pulled everything off beautifully, he figured she could even wear dirt and look good. He smiled as he saw her, and acknowledged the invitation to sit down. He flung himself onto her bed and sank in, it was the softest thing he had ever felt. He almost nodded off while laying there, but he kept himself up - watching Diana intently. She noticed, he smiled and gave a tiny laugh as she double took him. He would have gotten up to strut around, and model them for her - but her bed was consuming him.

"I figured I would make you happy and be 'different.' I must say, they are much different than my dress pants, but I can't say I dislike them."

He laughed at her excitement, but he really couldn't lift himself - the bed was so damn comfortable. He merely lifted his head up an inch and gave her a wink, and giggled before falling back into the crevice he created in the blankets. He had gone shopping without her, and it was interesting because he was a total fashion moron - the sales clerk literally had to hold hand to help.

"I got jeans... lots of jeans, enough to make me broke. I bought many shirts, polos, tees, um..... I have like a ton of cardigans now, because they are pretty. And sorry for my lack of enthusiasm, beautiful - your bed is eating me."

He pulled himself out mostly, but she was a great deal of help. He fell into her and held onto her, wrapping his arms around her and spinning her around the room. What she said had been funny, it made him laugh - mainly because it made him think of them as book characters. It was interesting, but he loved the fact that she teased him back, it made the humor even better. He kissed her forehead and then sat her back on her feet, and opened the door for her.

"You are right, no more dilly dallying - we have to hurry. After you, madam Diana."
